This is my list of suggestions for places to eat, stay, shop and sightsee in Bangkok.

Places to eat
Mango Tree. 37 Soi Tantawan, Surawongse Road (Silom District). tel 02 236 1681. open: 11:30 - late evening daily.
@ The Cafe at Jim Thompson's House. near National Stadium Skytrain station. A pleasant place to sit and relax and have a lunch or light refreshment. open: 09:00 - 17:00 daily.
@ Le Dalat. tel 02 258 4192. Off of Sukhumvit Road, near the Asok Skytrain station. High-end Vietnamese food. open: 11:30 - 14:30; 17:00 - 22:00 daily.
Places to stay
Silom Serene. 7 Soi Pipat (Silom 3), Silom Road, Bangrak. tel 02 636 6599
The Swiss Lodge. 3 Convent Road, Silom. tel 02 233 5345
The Peninsula Bangkok. 333 Charoennakom Road Klongsan. tel 02 861 2888. High-end luxury hotel on the west side of the Chao Phraya river; good deals are often available because it's location is somewhat inconvenient.
Phra Athit Mansion. 22 Phra Athit Road (Banglamphu district). tel 02 280 0744. Recommended in a October 2002 New York Times article as having good "standard motel-issue rooms... reasonably clean, spacious and quiet." USD20/night.
Places to see
The Grand Palace. The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaeo is well worth a day-long visit. Be sure to observe dress restrictions and get there as early as possible in the day. open: 8:30 - 15:30 daily (palace halls closed Sat & Sun).
Wat Po. This is the temple that houses the huge reclining buddha. You just have to see it for yourself to understand! It's very impressive. open: 8:30 - 17:00 daily.
Jim Thompson's House. near National Stadium Skytrain station. This is the house that Jim Thompson (a famous American who lived in Thailand in the post-war period) built from several old traditional Thai houses. The house and grounds are gorgeous and it is a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of downtown Bangkok. open: 09:00 - 17:00 daily (last tour at 16:30).
Places to shop; other suggestions
Jim Thompson's Thai Silk Company. Surawong Road (Silom District). This is a wonderful store to shop for presents and well-made men's and women's clothing. open: 9:00 - 21:00 daily.
Chatuchak Weekend Market. near Mo Chit station on Skytrain. This is an incredible experience. If you want to do it properly, show up at around 8am, then you can go back to your hotel early in the afternoon and kick back; this market tends to really take the energy out of you! open: 9:00 - 18:00 Sat & Sun only.
The Night Bazaar in Silom district. I don't tend to buy things here, but it's kind of a fun "window" shopping experience. Beware of pickpockets! open: 18:00 - late evening daily.
Nancy Chandler's map of Bangkok is an indispensible guide to navigating the city and major sites. It is available in most English-language book shops and many major hotel gift shops.
